Lendlease and Turner Win $1.5-billion Design-Build Contract for Javits Center Addition

On January 31st, 2017 the New York Convention Center Development Corporation announced the award of a $1.5B Design-Build contract to expand the New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center to the joint venture consortium of project manager Lendlease and construction company Turner Construction, with design services by tvdesign. It is interesting to note that the Javits Center is one of very few projects in New York authorized to use design-build, despite widespread acknowledgement from lawmakers that D/B reduces costs and shortens delivery schedules. The winning proposal offered significant design, logistical and operational benefits, including increased atrium space, integrated public and support spaces. The JV also committed to maintain current operations during all phases of construction.

The Javits Center is the busiest convention center in the United States, hosting hundreds of events and serving over two million customers per year. Located on Manhattan‘s West Side on 11th Avenue between West 34th and West 40th Streets, the six-block facility encompasses 2.1 million square feet, of which 840,000 SF is exhibition space. The new LEED Silver-certified center will include 27 new loading docks, roof terrace and pavilion, meeting room and ballroom space, and a 500,000 SF exhibition hall. The expansion project will be funded through a combination of State appropriation and bond issuance proceeds. Read More
